Yard Work

Saturday, May 17, 2008

I herby vow to maintain our yard this summer. Ami and I are tired of having to mow through jungles. In the past we have let our grass get a little long before cutting it. The obvious benefit is not mowing as often. The problem is that when you do mow its three times the work, not to mention the neighbors regard you as white trash. Especially these one crazy neighbors on the corner who mow their lawn 3 times per week. They bought the house over a year ago and still haven't moved in. This doesn't however keep them from coming over three times per week to do 8 hours of yard work. So anyway our mower has been repaired and the grass is cut. Any elaborate garden plans have been postponed for next year but we are happy to have a clean and green yard:-)

I hate yard work. With a passion. Yard work is one of the primary reasons why I wanted kids. I am not joking. The day Christopher is old enough and strong enough to handle the mower, I am done. Forever.

How can anyone like yard work that grew up in Wyoming. In Wyoming yard work starts in late June and is finished by the end of August. Living here feels like a rip-off in comparison. (For those who don't like it I mean.) For myself I like yard work, twice a year I work in the yard. The rest of the time it's Alan's yard. The end.

Great backyard... i mean, Great Funland! You're not white trash until you have an old Firebird sitting up on cinder blocks in three foot long grass in the middle of your yard... THEN you're WT

So true about Wyoming. Not to mention the whole white trash image. In Wyoming it took a lot to be white trash because a bad lawn was traditional. Here everything is so green that long grass totally qualifies you.

I hate yard work, but I love to "visit" my tulips and trees and smell the lilacs, etc. However, I think Dad may be a yard-lover inside, and all those years of WY living buried it. He is, after all, a son of 2 yard gourmets. I am grateful. He can do it. I'm even learning to let him make the design decisions. Which may be the only thing I ever really enjoyed about it (except as noted).
