Golf, Sport or Hobby?

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

I'm thinking about taking up golf and that has spawned a series of doubts & thoughts about the game.

  • Is Golf a Sport or a Game? You don't usually sweat but you do keep score. Where do we draw the line if you include golf? Is chess or online gaming a sport?
  • How often and for how long will I have to golf before I'm good enough to not be embarrassed when I'm out there?
  • Does a certain physique of person have an advantage? Left handers, Tall people, Fat people, etc?
  • Will this be an easy way to spend time with friends & family? IE: Do any of you golf and want to go out with me?
All of this golf talk is making me more and more serious about the idea. I watched the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance the other day with Ami and it kind of sold me.

Here is a clip from the movie:

I think you should take up golf as a hobby and/or sport, I've always meant to do tht, but I've never gotten around to it.

This friend/family probably won't golf with you. I see all kinds of people who golf, but they all have one thing in common. You have to wear plaid pants and a sweater vest. Did you know it costs a lot of money to golf? I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Money is the main problem I have with the sport/hobby. Plus which I have a brother-in-law who has become obsessed with golf and spends hours and hours a week golfing, I am not exaggerating here. I hate to think what that translates into amount of money and time spent away from his home. Anyway, I'm basically against it has a obsession but can see it might be fun as an occasional outing.

Golf Rocks! Who cares it is a sport or hobby. The bottom line is that it is both fun and relaxing. The golf course is a great place to get things done. Do business, relax, think, you name it. Lets go, anytime.

Also, I still look terrible also, but I don't care.

I have golfed once in my life about 10 years ago. I went with 3 friends that were all really good and I was really bad. I think it would be fun to try it again, especially if we went since we would both be new at it. How is Wyoming? (p.s. I got my network up and running between the vista & xp computers!)

Why would you even want to. Golf is boring. AT least that is my opinion. I don't find anything exciting about it.

I guess Golfing is a little bit better than having a husband who's a gamer or one of those weirdos who re-enacts Renaissance's fights... those people are crazy.
I always thought that in order to be a "sport" you have to sweat... but I guess bocce ball is an Olympic Event... soooooooo--

Jacob, golfing during the summer is just as fun as snowboarding or skiing in the winter. It won't cost you too much money to get clubs ($125 for nice irons, find a driver and putter at garage sales). It is my favorite thing to do in the summer, and I'd love to go out and play 18 with you! Don't worry if it is a sport or game, it's all entertainment!
